2023

21 Nov 2023 Joined a panel on "Opportunities and Challenges for Foundation Models in Biology" at the "Schmidt Center - Helmhotz Institute, ML in Genomics Collaboration Kick-off" event. Points of convergence with others: difficulty of improving circular/simplistic benchmarks, limited data for "scaling laws" compared to natural language and computer vision, yet optimism for the future!
31 Oct 2023 Delivered an invited talk at the Ohio State University, Topology, Geometry, and Data Analysis (TGGA) Seminar, presenting my doctoral work on optimal transport (OT)-based algorithms for multi-modal data integration. Many thanks for the invitation to Aziz Burak Gulen, a humble, and wickedly smart advisee of Facundo Mémoli, the pioneer of the Gromov-Wasserstein distance. It was surreal to discuss OT with them!

6-7 Oct 2023 Feeling inspired after SorinFest!, celebrating the legacy of my doctoral co-advisor, Sorin Istrail, as a computer scientist who led the development of the sequencing read assembly algorithms used for the Human Genome Project (HGP) at Celera, on his 70th birthday. Many of the pioneers from HGP, including Michael Waterman and Craig J. Venter, reflected on the progress made and the promises yet to be reached since HGP's completion, and retold stories of the difference Sorin has made. It is humbling to be co-advised by such a warm person and a capable scientist!
4 Sep 2023 Joined the steering committee of the Models, Inference and Algorithms (MIA) Initiative at the Broad Institute, many thanks to the invitation by the current co-chair Salil Bhate! During my PhD, attending MIA exposed me to branches of computational bio(medicine) outside of the scope of my graduate department. It is wonderful to be contributing to this community now!
17 Jul 2023 Started my postdoctoral fellowship at the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. I’m looking forward to the next three years as I work to establish my independent research agenda, collaborating with some of the scientists I have long admired.
10 Apr 2023 Defended my PhD thesis! I feel really grateful to my primary doctoral advisor, Ritambhara Singh, who has been the best mentor I could ask for, an empathetic leader and a great role model throughout my PhD. Also feeling grateful for the support I have received from my co-advisor, Sorin Istrail, and my "unofficial co-advisor'', Derek Aguiar, with whom I share an academic lineage :) Some photos from our celebration below:
